What size rug do you need for each room?
Most living rooms with a three-seat sofa, and most queen and king beds, take 200 × 300 cm; a super king or a table for six takes 240 × 340 cm. Size the rug to the furniture: every seat's front legs on it, at least 50 cm showing each side of a bed, and 60 to 75 cm past a dining table's edge. Leave 30 to 60 cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls.
What size rug for a living room?
Measure the seating, not the room. With a three-seat sofa and two chairs, a 200 × 300 cm rug usually takes the front legs of every seat. An L-shaped sofa usually takes 240 × 340 or 250 × 350 cm; a large corner sofa, a villa living room or a majlis, 300 × 400 cm. A small rug floating in the middle makes the room look smaller.
What size rug goes under a king or queen bed?
Lay the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, so it shows either side and past the foot. A 200 × 300 cm rug suits a queen, or a king 180 cm wide; a super king, 200 cm wide, takes 240 × 340 cm. In a small bedroom, a runner down each side, about 70 × 150 cm, uses far less rug.
What size rug goes under a dining table?
Add 60 to 75 cm to every side of the table, so a chair pulled out to sit down stays on the rug. A six-seat table of about 90 × 180 cm takes a 240 × 340 cm rug. A round table 120 cm across takes a round rug of about 240 cm. A flat weave or a low pile is easiest under chairs and quickest to sweep.
What size rug for a kids' room or nursery?
Put the rug where the children play, clear of the door's swing: a kids' rug of 120 × 170 or 160 × 230 cm, or a round rug 150 to 200 cm across, suits most children's bedrooms and nurseries. A low pile is easier for toys and crawling, and simpler to keep clean. On tile or marble, a non-slip pad keeps it from sliding.
| Room | Common sizes (cm) | How to size it |
|---|---|---|
| Living room, three-seat sofa | 200 × 300, 240 × 340 | The front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug |
| Large living room or majlis | 250 × 350, 300 × 400 | Every seat's front legs on it, 30 to 60 cm of bare floor round it; with floor cushions, the rug runs under the seating |
| Queen, double or king bed, up to 180 cm wide | 200 × 300 | The lower two-thirds of the bed, at least 50 cm showing each side |
| Super king bed, about 200 cm wide | 240 × 340 | The lower two-thirds of the bed, at least 50 cm showing each side |
| Dining table for six | 240 × 340, 250 × 350 | The table plus 60 to 75 cm on every side |
| Kids' room or nursery | 120 × 170, 160 × 230, or 150 to 200 across | The play space, clear of the door |
| Hallway or galley kitchen | 60 to 90 wide, 150 to 400 long | 10 to 15 cm of floor each side, stopping short of the doors |
| Entrance | 120 × 170, or 150 across | Clear of the door's swing |
Common rug sizes, as a guide; for a bed, measure the frame, not the mattress. Any size in between can be made to order: see custom rugs made to your size.
Which rug shape suits your room?
Let the furniture set the shape. A rectangle follows a sofa, a bed or a long dining table, so most living rooms and bedrooms take one. A round rug suits a round table, an entrance, a reading corner or a nursery, and softens a room of straight lines. A runner is long and narrow, for hallways, kitchens and either side of a bed.

Each shape can be made to order in any size. A runner on the stairs is fitted rather than laid loose: see stair carpet and runners.
What size is a runner rug?
Most runners are 60 to 90 cm wide. In a hallway, make it 20 to 30 cm narrower than the hall, so floor shows each side, and 30 to 60 cm shorter, so it stops short of the doors. A kitchen rug or runner is often 60 to 80 cm wide; bedroom runners, 70 to 80 cm wide and 150 to 200 cm long. Yours can be made to exactly those measurements.

What about square, oval and odd-shaped rugs?
A square rug is a rectangle with equal sides, such as 200 × 200 or 300 × 300 cm, ordered like any other size. It suits a square table, a square room or seating on four sides, as in a majlis. For an oval, an L-shape or a rug cut round a column, send a sketch with its sizes on WhatsApp first: custom rugs shows how to measure.

Which rug material suits a Dubai home?
For most Dubai homes, a low pile in wool or polypropylene suits best. Wool is resilient and resists soiling; polypropylene, a tough synthetic, lets sand vacuum out and shrugs off water-based spills, though oily marks cling. Cotton flat weaves are light and often washable. Viscose, made to look like silk, marks easily. Jute suits dry rooms, and outdoor synthetics resist sun and water. Beyond jute and outdoor rugs, ask on WhatsApp which fibres we offer.

Low pile, high pile or flat weave?
Pile is the yarn standing up from the rug's base, like a brush's bristles; a flat weave has none. Low pile and flat weaves are the easiest to live with in Dubai: sand and dust lift out with a vacuum, chairs slide over them and doors clear them. High pile and shaggy rugs are soft underfoot and quieten a bedroom, but they hold dust deeper and flatten where people walk, so keep them for bedrooms and quiet corners.

What colour rug hides dust and sand?
Neutral mid tones with some texture or a small pattern hide everyday dust best: sand, beige, taupe, warm grey and olive. Pure white and cream show every footprint; very dark plain rugs show lint and fine dust. In strong sun, a lighter rug hides fading better. With a grey sofa, a rug a few shades lighter or darker keeps the two from blending.

How much does a rug cost in Dubai?
A rug is priced per piece, and as a general rule its size, fibre and pile set the price: a bigger rug, a costlier fibre such as wool and a denser pile each add to it. To get yours, send us the shape and size on WhatsApp: we reply with the price of your rug, and any delivery charge, before you pay in cash or by payment link.
Do you deliver rugs to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other emirates?
Yes. Rugs are delivered anywhere in the UAE, not only in Dubai: Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Tell us your area and emirate on WhatsApp when you order, and ask us the delivery charge and time for your address before you pay.

How do I order a rug from Karpets?

What to tell us on WhatsApp
- The shape, and the size in centimetres: width and length, or the diameter for a round rug. Not sure? Mark it out on the floor in masking tape, open the doors and sit on the sofa to check, as how to measure for a custom rug shows.
- The room it is for, and the floor it lies on: tile, marble, wood or carpet.
- The colour, fibre or style you have in mind; a photo of the room helps.
- Your area and emirate, for the delivery.

What is the standard rug size in cm?
There is no single standard, but a handful of sizes recur: rectangles of 120 × 170, 160 × 230, 200 × 290 or 200 × 300, 240 × 340, 250 × 350 and 300 × 400 cm; round rugs of 150, 200 and 240 cm; and runners 60 to 80 cm wide. Ours can be made to order, so any size in between is possible.
Which rugs are best for a living room?
A wool or polypropylene rug in a low or medium pile, so the furniture stands steady, about 200 × 300 cm for a three-seat sofa and two chairs. Wool springs back from footprints; polypropylene copes best with sand, spills and children, though oily stains cling. Keep viscose and deep shaggy piles for quieter rooms.
Round rug or rectangle: which works in a living room?
Either can. A rectangle lines up with a sofa and chairs and fills the seating area evenly, so it suits most living rooms. A round rug works under a round coffee table, in a square room with the seating facing in, or in a reading corner. In a long open-plan room, a rectangle under the seating and a round rug under the dining table often work well together.
Which rugs are easiest to clean?
Low pile and flat weaves in synthetic fibres such as polypropylene: sand vacuums straight out and they dry quickly. Vacuum once or twice a week, with the beater bar off on shaggy, silky and loop-pile rugs, turn the rug every few months so it wears evenly, and blot spills rather than rubbing. We don't clean or repair rugs; for a deep clean, call a specialist.
Are rugs machine washable?
Some are. Small cotton flat weaves and rugs sold as washable can go in a large machine on a cool, gentle cycle; check the label first and dry them flat in the shade. Jute, viscose, most wool and tufted rugs with a glued backing should not go in one unless the label says so, and most rugs are too big for a home machine anyway.
Can rugs be cut to size?
Some machine-made rugs can be cut down and their edges bound again by a specialist, but the border and the pattern rarely survive it, and hand-knotted rugs are best not cut at all. A rug made to order avoids the problem: ours can be made in the size you need, so there is nothing to cut.
Do I need a pad under my rug?
On tile, marble or wood, yes. A non-slip pad stops the rug sliding, helps the corners lie flat and adds a little cushion. Natural rubber or felt-and-rubber pads suit wood, vinyl and marble, as some PVC pads can mark a finish; cut it 2 to 3 cm smaller than the rug all round. On fitted carpet, use a pad made for rugs over carpet.
Where can I buy rugs in Dubai?
From Karpets, online. Rugs can be made to order in any size and are delivered in Dubai and anywhere else in the UAE. The form on this page writes your shape, size and room out as a WhatsApp message; we reply on WhatsApp with the price, and you pay in cash or by payment link.
How long does it take to get a rug?
Our rugs can be made to order in the size you need. When you order on WhatsApp, ask how long yours will take to reach your area and emirate, and decide before you pay.
When is a rug called a carpet?
In the UAE the two words are often used for the same thing. In everyday use, a rug, or area rug, lies loose with floor showing round it, and a carpet is fitted from wall to wall, though a large hand-knotted piece, such as a Persian carpet, is still called a carpet when laid loose. We do both: rugs, and wall-to-wall carpet fitted in Dubai.
