Sisal carpet, jute carpet and jute rugs in Dubai

We fit sisal and jute carpet wall to wall in Dubai homes and offices, sisal on stairs too, and make jute rugs to order in any size. Sisal is the hard-wearing natural fibre, for living rooms, hallways and stairs; jute is the softer one, for bedrooms and rugs. Samples of both come to a free measuring visit anywhere in Dubai, our own fitters lay the carpet, and jute rugs are ordered on WhatsApp and delivered across the UAE.

Sisal or jute carpet: which suits your Dubai home or office?

Choose sisal for wear and jute for softness. Sisal comes from the leaves of the sisal agave: stiff, firm and one of the toughest plant fibres, so it suits living rooms, hallways, stairs, receptions and meeting rooms. Jute comes from the stalk of the jute plant: softer and warmer underfoot but less hard-wearing, so it belongs in bedrooms and quiet rooms, and makes soft natural rugs. Neither likes water.

Which natural fibre suits which room?

Sisal and jute belong in dry, air-conditioned rooms. Choose a room to see which fibre suits it, and which rooms suit neither.

Living room: sisal

A living room takes daily footfall and the weight of sofas and tables. A tight sisal weave, plain, herringbone or boucle, wears best there and keeps its texture. A jute rug on top softens the seating area.

What are the alternatives to sisal carpet?

Seagrass is as tough as sisal and resists spills better, but it is slippery, on stairs most of all. Coir, from coconut husk, is the coarsest. Hessian, or burlap, is coarse jute cloth; jute blended with wool or cotton is softer. Sisal-look is usually polypropylene, which water does not harm. Wool-sisal, wool in sisal-style weaves, is the softest. Ask at the visit whether we can supply one, or compare the other carpets we fit.

Is sisal carpet a good choice for an office?

For a reception, a meeting room or a quiet office, yes: a tight sisal weave is hard-wearing and calm to look at. Castor chairs wear it, so put a mat under each desk chair, and blot coffee at once. In a commercial fit-out the floor finish may need a fire test certificate for the building's approval, so check that the weave you like has one. Busy open-plan floors with cabling below suit office carpet tiles better.

How do I clean sisal and jute carpet?

Vacuum it often and keep it dry. Grit is what wears natural fibre down, so vacuum at least twice a week, with the brush bar switched off for jute and loose weaves. Blot a spill at once with a dry white cloth, working from the edge in, and never rub it. Never soak, shampoo or steam clean it either: water drives a spill deeper and can leave a brown mark of its own.

Living with natural fibre

  • Lift marks with a dry-powder cleaner made for natural fibre.
  • Put a mat at every outside door to stop the sand.
  • Put cups or felt pads under heavy furniture, and lift it rather than drag it.
  • Snip a pulled loop level with scissors; never pull it out.
  • Turn rugs every few months so they wear evenly.

Can sisal carpet get wet?

Not without risk. Water swells sisal and jute, they can shrink as they dry, and the plant's own colour can rise to the surface as a brown stain. A spill blotted at once is usually fine; a flood, a dripping AC unit or a wet mop is not. A pure jute rug cannot go in the washing machine either, so check what a rug sold as washable jute is made of.

Does natural fibre suit Dubai's heat, sand and AC?

Indoors, mostly yes. Sisal and jute take moisture from the air and give it back, so they are most stable where temperature and humidity stay even, as in a room with the AC on as normal. If the home is shut up over summer with the AC off, the humidity rises and natural fibre can ripple or grow mould, so leave the AC on low while you are away. Fine sand works down into any weave and wears it from inside, so vacuum more often in a villa with a garden. Strong sun fades natural fibre, so draw blinds or curtains against the afternoon sun.

How big should a jute rug be?

Measure the furniture, not the room. In a living room the rug should reach under at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs. By a bed it should run 50 to 60 cm out on each side; under a dining table, 60 cm or more past the edge, so pulled-out chairs stay on it. Not sure? Tape the outline on the floor and leave it down for a day or two before you order.

Can I have a sisal rug made to size?

A sisal rug is sisal carpet cut to size, its edges bound with a fabric or leather border, or whipped with yarn, so the weave cannot fray. Ask on WhatsApp whether we can make one in your size. Jute rugs are made in any size, and sisal for a whole room is measured at the free visit and fitted wall to wall.

What size round jute rug do I need?

Under a round table, choose a diameter about 120 cm more than the table's, so 60 cm of rug shows all round and pulled-out chairs stay on it. A round rug also suits a square room or a reading corner. Jute comes braided, thick and soft underfoot, or flat-woven, thinner and better under chairs that move; tell us what you have in mind and we show you what we can make on WhatsApp.

How is a room measured for sisal carpet?

Every room is measured at its widest points, into alcoves and doorways, with a little extra left to trim at the skirting. Sisal and jute carpet comes off the roll in fixed widths, most often 4 metres, sometimes 5, so a room wider than the roll needs a seam. We plan where it falls, away from doorways and the main walking line, where footfall would work it open.

  2. Seam

Where two widths of the roll meet, kept out of the doorways. Your room: no seams.

  3. Doorway

Natural fibre usually ends at the middle of the door on a threshold strip, which stops a stiff weave's edge from lifting.

  4. Skirting

Natural fibre is cut straight along the weave and trimmed to the skirting all round, for a clean edge.

  5. Underlay

Supplied with your new carpet and laid under the whole floor first, a firm, flat base for the weave.

Can sisal carpet be joined?

Yes. Where a room is wider than the roll, widths are joined edge to edge. On a plain weave a well-placed seam is discreet; on herringbone and striped weaves the pattern has to be lined up across it, and on a chunky boucle the rows, so the join shows more. At the size set in the counter at the top of this page, your room needs no seams, worked out on a 4 m or 5 m roll; many sisal and jute weaves come only 4 m wide, which can add a seam. The counter takes the fewest seams unless that needs over a quarter more carpet, so in a long, narrow hallway it may cut widths across it; a fitter usually runs one piece down its length instead. We confirm where any seam runs when we measure.

How much does sisal carpet cost in Dubai?

Sisal and jute carpet are priced per square metre for the weave you choose; sisal on stairs is priced for your staircase, as measured (see stair carpet). Jute rugs are priced per piece, by size, on WhatsApp. For carpet, ask at the free measuring visit, or on WhatsApp, for the figure for your rooms and what it covers: the carpet, the underlay, the fitting and taking up any old carpet.

Is sisal carpet expensive?

It depends on the fibre and the weave. Jute usually costs less than sisal, and a simple weave usually less than a fine or patterned one such as herringbone; wool-sisal usually costs more, and a polypropylene sisal-look less. A room also needs more than its floor area, since natural fibre comes off a roll of fixed width: the room set in the counter at the top of this page, 20 m² of floor, takes up to about 25.5 m² off the roll.

How is sisal carpet fitted?

On the day we agree with you, our own fitters take up and remove any old carpet, put down the underlay, then lay the sisal or jute and trim it to the skirting. Natural fibre usually ends at a doorway on a threshold strip; ask at the visit how yours will be finished. It is stiffer than synthetic carpet and has to be cut straight along the weave, so the edges and seams take the most care.

On the day

  • Old carpet lifted and taken away
  • Underlay laid under the whole floor
  • The weave cut straight and trimmed to the skirting

Is sisal carpet glued down or stretched?

Makers of sisal and jute carpet usually recommend sticking it down rather than stretching it over gripper strips like a soft carpet. Most often the underlay is stuck to the floor and the carpet to the underlay, called double-stick, which holds a stiff weave flat and keeps it from rippling or opening at a seam. The adhesive is hard to clean off marble and can mark a wooden floor when the carpet comes up, so if you want to keep the floor underneath, say so at the visit.

Should sisal carpet settle in the room before it is laid?

Usually, yes. Natural fibre takes in moisture from the air and moves a little as it does, so makers commonly ask for it to lie unrolled in the room for a day or two before fitting, with the AC on as normal. Ask at the visit how this works for your rooms.

Where can I get sisal or jute carpet fitted in Dubai?

Is sisal carpet hard-wearing?

Yes. Sisal is one of the toughest plant fibres, which is why it goes in hallways, on stairs and in busy living rooms; a tight, flat weave wears best. How long it lasts depends on the weave, the traffic and the care. Grit and water shorten its life most, so a mat at each outside door and spills blotted at once help it last.

Is sisal carpet soft underfoot?

Not like wool or synthetic carpet. Sisal is firm and textured, though a fine boucle feels smoother than a chunky weave. If softness matters most, choose jute, which is softer than sisal or seagrass, or ask whether we can supply wool-sisal, which keeps the look of sisal with the feel of wool.

Is sisal carpet good if I have cats or dogs?

It depends on the pet. Cats love to scratch sisal, which is why scratching posts are made of it, and a loop weave such as boucle can catch claws; a flat, tight weave is safer. With dogs, accidents are the bigger risk: urine soaks into sisal and jute and can stain, so natural fibre suits house-trained pets best.

Is sisal carpet good for stairs?

Yes, in a tight weave, and it is the natural fibre we suggest for stairs. Jute is better kept off them, and seagrass, though tough, is smooth enough to slip on. Sisal is firmer than wool, and a smooth weave can feel slippery in socks, so try the sample on your own stairs at the visit before you choose it.

Can you steam clean sisal or jute carpet?

No. Steam and carpet shampoo push water deep into the fibre, which can shrink the carpet and leave brown marks that may never come out. A deep clean is done dry instead: a dry-powder cleaner is brushed into the weave and vacuumed out with the dirt, by a specialist who cleans natural fibre.

Is sisal carpet moth-proof?

Yes. Clothes moths feed on wool and other animal fibres, not plant fibre, so pure sisal, jute and seagrass are safe from them. Wool-sisal contains wool, so moths can eat it unless it was moth-proofed when it was made; vacuum it regularly, under the furniture too.

Does sisal carpet need underlay?

Usually, yes, and a firm one rather than a soft, springy one: a stiff natural weave that flexes underfoot wears faster, most of all along the seams. An underlay also makes the floor quieter than carpet stuck straight to the floor. We supply underlay with new fitted carpet; ask at the visit which one suits your weave.

Do jute rugs shed?

Yes, at first. A new jute rug sheds most in its first weeks, and a braided or chunky one more than a tight, flat weave; after that it sheds much less, though jute always sheds a little. Vacuum it gently and shake small rugs outside.

Can sisal or jute rugs go outside?

Not natural ones. Sun breaks plant fibre down and damp turns it brown and then mouldy, so neither lasts on a Dubai balcony or terrace. Rugs sold as outdoor sisal or jute are usually polypropylene woven to look like natural fibre. For outside, choose an outdoor carpet or a weatherproof rug, which we also supply.
