Outdoor carpet and rugs for Dubai balconies and terraces

Outdoor carpet is synthetic carpet made to live outside: it copes with sun, water and sand, and dries fast. We measure your balcony, terrace or roof and bring samples at a free visit anywhere in Dubai, and our own fitters lay the carpet. Rather have something you can lift and move? Order a weatherproof outdoor rug in any size on WhatsApp, delivered anywhere in the UAE.

Fitted outdoor carpet, an outdoor rug or artificial grass: which suits your space?

Three kinds of outdoor flooring suit most Dubai balconies and terraces. Fitted outdoor carpet covers the whole floor, cut round the drain and short of the door track; glued down, it is steadiest in the wind. An outdoor rug is a loose piece marking out a seating area: the easy choice if you rent. Artificial grass gives a green, lawn-like floor. We do all three: ask on WhatsApp, or let the free visit in Dubai settle it.

Balcony, terrace or pool deck: where does outdoor carpet work?

Anywhere outside, open to the sky or under cover. Outdoor carpet is one of the simplest kinds of balcony flooring: it goes straight over the tiles, with no building work. Choose your space below.

Balcony carpet or a balcony rug

Many Dubai balconies are long and shallow, with a sliding door on one side and a floor drain or outlet near the edge. Fitted carpet covers the tiles edge to edge and, glued down, is the steadiest in the wind; a balcony rug keeps it simple and moves house with you.

Which outdoor carpet copes with Dubai's sun, heat, sand and water?

Outdoor carpet and rugs are almost always synthetic: polypropylene and polyester take up little water and don't rot. Polypropylene (olefin) is the most common; it is coloured right through, and UV-stabilised to stand the sun. Polyester, often recycled from plastic bottles, feels softer. Woven PVC takes up virtually no water. For Dubai, pick a light or mid tone, which stays cooler and hides fading, and a low, flat weave that lets the sand shake out.

Can a jute or sisal rug go outside?

Only under cover. Jute and sisal are plant fibres: they soak up water, can rot or go mouldy if they stay damp, and fade in direct sun, so a jute rug suits a shaded majlis or a covered terrace that never gets wet. Many rugs sold as outdoor jute rugs are polypropylene woven to look like jute: that is the kind for an open balcony. For indoors, see jute rugs and sisal carpet.

Will outdoor carpet fade or get hot in the sun?

It fades some, in time, and it can get hot. How fast the colour goes depends on the fibre and the sun: solution-dyed fibre is coloured right through, so it keeps its colour far longer than ordinary indoor carpet, a good UV stabiliser stops the fibre going brittle, and mid tones hide what fading there is. Heat depends most on shade, then on colour and material: in a Dubai summer any carpet in full sun can be too hot for bare feet, children and pets by late morning, a dark one, PVC or a rubber back more so. An awning or a parasol makes the biggest difference.

Does water drain through outdoor carpet, and what goes underneath?

Much of it does. An open, flat weave and a drainage backing let rain and wash-down water through, and the floor's slope carries it to the drain. A solid rubber backing grips smooth tiles but traps water under it, so it suits covered spaces; in the heat, some rubber and latex backs can also stain stone or sealed concrete.

Outdoor carpet usually goes straight onto the floor with no underlay, which would only hold water. An outdoor rug rarely needs a pad; if the rug slides on smooth tiles, choose an open-mesh pad made for outdoors, so the water still drains.

What size outdoor rug do I need, and how do I order one?

Measure the floor you want covered, keep about 15 cm clear of each wall and the railing, and stop the rug short of the door track so the sliding door still runs; leave the drain uncovered. We make outdoor rugs to order in any size, to the exact width your balcony takes. Send the size on WhatsApp and confirm the order there; you pay in cash or by payment link, and we deliver anywhere in the UAE.

The sizes below are common ones for each space, not a stock list: any size is made to order, and for another shape, ask and we confirm what we can make. Want one indoors too? Rugs made to your size are ordered the same way.

A doorstep mat or a balcony rug

A doorstep or small balcony mat runs about 60 × 90 to 90 × 150 cm (2 × 3 to 3 × 5 ft). A rug for a typical apartment balcony is larger: about 120 × 180 to 160 × 230 cm (4 × 6 to 5 × 8 ft), keeping 15 cm clear of the walls and railing.

How is a balcony or terrace measured for outdoor carpet?

We measure the length along the building and the width out to the railing, then note everything the carpet works around: the floor drain, the slope that carries water to it, the sliding door's track, pillars, planters and the AC unit. Outdoor carpet comes off the roll in fixed widths, so some floors need a join; ask at the visit where it will fall, since away from the main walkway is best.

  1. Size

Measured wall to wall along the building, and from the door out to the railing. Yours: 1.5 × 5 m, or 7.5 m² (81 sq ft).

  2. Joins

Outdoor carpet often comes in 2 m and 4 m widths. Cut with as few joins as sense allows, yours takes one piece off a 2 m roll, no join; at the visit we check where any join falls.

  3. Drain

Left uncovered, with the carpet cut neatly round it, so the water always has a way out.

  4. Door

The carpet stops short of the sliding door's track, so the door still runs and water is not drawn inside.

  5. Edges

Finished along the walls and the railing, so the wind has as little as possible to catch; ask at the visit how the edges of yours will be held.

Can I measure my balcony myself first?

Yes, roughly. Measure the length along the wall and the width from the door to the railing, in metres, and enter them in the Width and Length boxes at the top of this page: that is enough to book. Treat them as a guide only: the carpet is cut to the sizes we take at the free visit.

How much does outdoor carpet cost in Dubai?

Fitted outdoor carpet is priced per square metre. Your figure depends on the carpet you choose, the size of the floor, and the work: joins to make, drains and pillars to cut round, old carpet to lift. The free visit in Dubai measures the space so we can price your job. An outdoor rug is priced per piece, by its size: send the size on WhatsApp to get yours.

Why do outdoor carpet prices online look so different?

Some shops quote per square metre of carpet alone, some per square metre fitted, and some per rug. Compare like with like: ask whether the figure covers the fitting, finishing the edges and taking up the old carpet, and whether it is for your exact size. A cheap figure per m² can cover the carpet and nothing else.

The carpet changes the figure too: a dense tufted or woven pile costs more than a thin needle-punch carpet, its fibres matted into a felt.

What happens on fitting day, or when your rug arrives?

On fitting day, our own fitters take up any old carpet, roll out the new one, cut it round the drain and any pillars, stop it short of the door track and finish the edges. Ask at the visit how long the work will take, when it can be fitted and how the carpet will be held down on a windy floor. An outdoor rug needs no fitter: it arrives ready to unroll and lay.

How do you clean and look after outdoor carpet and rugs?

Little and often. Sweep or shake the sand out once a week; when it needs more, wash it with mild soap and a soft brush, hose it off and let it dry in the sun. On a balcony, shake a rug at floor level, never over the railing.

Lift a rug after heavy rain so the floor under it dries, turn it every few months so the sun fades it evenly, and keep the drain clear of sand and leaves. Keep barbecue coals, shisha and cigarettes off it: synthetic fibres melt.

Can outdoor carpet get wet, and is it waterproof?

Yes, it can get wet. Most is polypropylene or polyester, which take up very little water, so rain, pool splashes and hosing don't harm it, and it dries fast in the sun. Much outdoor carpet is made to let water through rather than keep it out, though solid-backed kinds shed it across the top, so what matters is that the water can get away to a clear drain.

Are outdoor rugs waterproof, and can they stay outside all year?

Weatherproof, yes; waterproof, no. The fibre sheds water and the weave lets it drain through. A synthetic outdoor rug can stay out all year in the UAE, as long as you lift it to dry after rain, washing or a run of humid nights; full summer sun will shorten its life.

How long does outdoor carpet last?

That depends most on the fibre, the sun and the wear. A shaded balcony with light use keeps its carpet far longer than an open roof in full sun. A solution-dyed, UV-stabilised fibre, sand swept out often and a floor that dries properly all help it last.

Does outdoor carpet have to be glued down?

No. There are three ways to lay outdoor carpet: glued, taped, or laid loose with its edges finished, held by its weight and the furniture. Glue holds best in the wind but is the hardest to take up; tape weakens in heat and water, so it suits covered spaces; loose-laid carpet lifts out easily but needs weight on a high, open floor. The free visit in Dubai settles which suits yours.

Can I put carpet on a rented balcony in Dubai?

Usually, yes. A carpet or rug on the balcony floor is a common choice in Dubai flats. Ask the landlord before anything is glued, check the building's rules with its management, and keep the drain clear. An outdoor rug needs no fixing at all.

How do I stop an outdoor rug blowing away?

Choose a heavier rug for a high or open balcony, and stand furniture on its corners or edges. A rug that fills most of the floor, with furniture on it and its edges near the walls, lifts less easily than a small one. On a windy high floor, fitted outdoor carpet glued down is the steadiest option.

Will an outdoor rug go mouldy or mark the tiles?

Only if it stays damp. Synthetic fibre won't rot, but mould can grow on dirt trapped in a rug that stays wet. Water and dirt left under it for days can mark tiles or concrete, and in the heat a rubber or latex back can stain stone or decking. Sweep under it now and then, let it dry after washing, and on an open balcony choose a rug that drains rather than one with a solid rubber back.

Can outdoor rugs be used indoors?

Yes. A synthetic outdoor rug works anywhere a tough, easy-to-clean rug is wanted, such as a hallway, a kitchen or a playroom, which is why many are sold as indoor-outdoor rugs or indoor-outdoor carpet. Flatter and firmer than most indoor rugs, they suit busy floors more than bedrooms. On vinyl or wood floors, avoid a rubber or latex back, which can mark them.

What are the pros and cons of outdoor carpet?

For: it makes a hard, slippery outdoor floor softer and quieter, copes with water and sand, and hoses clean. Against: it can get too hot for bare feet in full summer sun, fades in time, and glued carpet takes work to remove. Compare it with a rug or artificial grass for your space.

Do you fit outdoor carpet outside Dubai?

We fit outdoor carpet in Dubai, where the measuring visit is free. Outside Dubai, ask us, and we confirm job by job whether we can take it on. Outdoor rugs are different: you order them on WhatsApp and we deliver to all seven emirates of the UAE.
