Which artificial grass should I choose?
There is no single best artificial grass: start with where it goes and how hard it will be used, then choose the look. Pile height, the length of the blades, sets much of the feel: a short pile is firmer and easier to rinse clean; a longer one looks lusher and feels softer. Density, blade shape and a mix of greens decide how real it looks. We bring samples to the visit, so you choose standing on them.

Artificial grass on a balcony
The balcony's tiles, or its bare cement screed, are already the base, so the grass usually goes straight over them, held with outdoor adhesive or tape along the edges and joins: glue all over stops water reaching the outlet, and drilling could pierce the waterproofing. The floor must drain to its outlet now, because grass hides a puddle rather than curing it. A short pile suits most balconies.

Artificial grass on a roof terrace
Like a balcony, a roof is covered over its tiled or paved floor, with the drains left clear; a bare waterproofing membrane needs a protection layer or its maker's approval first. A roof takes the sun all day, so shade over the seating and a rinse before use matter most; a lighter green helps a little. Ask your building about weight limits and its rules for contractors.

Artificial grass for a villa garden
A garden is the biggest grass job, and often part of wider landscaping. On sand or soil the ground needs a firm, level base before any grass goes down; the surfaces under Measure explain why. The edges run against paths, planting or a pool surround, and the joins are best kept away from the main view. A medium pile is the usual all-rounder.

Artificial grass for a play area
A playground or play area needs a surface that drains and stays even. Under climbing frames and swings, a shock pad beneath the grass matters more than the blade length, because it softens a fall; ask for the pad's tested fall height and match it to the highest platform or swing seat. A short, dense pile is the easiest to keep clean. Plan shade too, for the summer.

Artificial grass for dogs and pets
Choose a dense, hard-wearing pile on a backing that lets water through, so a rinse carries urine away; a short pile is the easiest to pick up after and hose clean. Plan the pet area near a tap and a drain. At midday in summer the grass gets too hot for paws, so leave a shaded patch.
| Pile height | Underfoot | Looks | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short, up to 25 mm | Firm and flat, and the easiest to rinse clean. | Neat and close-cropped. | Balconies, roofs, pet runs, and play areas with a pad beneath. |
| Medium, 25 to 35 mm | Soft but springy. | Natural from a few metres away. | Most gardens and terraces; the all-rounder. |
| Long, over 35 mm | Deep and soft. | Lush; the blades lean and need brushing up. | Lawns looked at more than walked on, away from dust and falling leaves. |
These are the trade's usual bands, not a list of what we stock; the samples we bring to the visit show what we can supply.
What makes it look like a real lawn?
Three things besides the pile height. Density: the more tufts in each square metre, the less the backing shows. Blade shape: ridged or curved blades catch the light unevenly, as a real lawn does, and spring back after you walk on them. Colour: two or three greens over a short brown thatch, the curly yarn at the base that stands in for dead growth, read as grass; a single bright green looks plastic.
Judge the samples in daylight: from standing height for the look, on your knees for the feel.

Is artificial grass worth it in Dubai?
On a balcony or roof, where a real lawn is rarely practical, and in many villa gardens, yes. Artificial grass usually costs more to lay than a natural lawn, then needs no mowing and no watering beyond a rinse, and stays green all summer, while a natural lawn in Dubai needs watering every day through the hot months. The trade-off is summer heat in direct sun, which shade and a rinse ease.
| Artificial grassPlastic blades on a backing | Natural grassA living lawn | Outdoor carpetA flat, weatherproof pile | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | None beyond a rinse. | Daily irrigation through the summer. | None beyond a wash-down. |
| Upkeep | Brush and rinse; no mowing. | Mowing, feeding and weeding. | Sweep, vacuum and wash down. |
| Summer sun | Hot at midday; shade helps. | The coolest underfoot. | Warms up; a lighter colour helps. |
| Underfoot | Soft and lawn-like. | Soft and cool. | Flat and firm, like a rug. |
| Works on | Balconies, roofs, gardens and play areas. | Open ground with soil, sun and water. | Balconies, terraces and roofs. |
On a small balcony, a flat outdoor carpet or an outdoor rug is the other option: firmer than grass, easy to sweep, and a rug lifts and goes with you when you move.
Is artificial grass too hot, or unsafe, for children and pets?
Summer heat is the real drawback in Dubai. For children and pets, safety comes down to what the grass is made of, and what lies in it and under it.

Does artificial grass get hot in a Dubai summer?
Yes. In direct sun, above all from May to September, it gets far hotter than a natural lawn: at midday, too hot for bare feet or paws. Shade helps most, then a hose rinse, which cools it briefly; run the hose first, as water left in it in the sun can scald. Lighter greens and heat-reflecting yarn help a little. Barbecues and fire pits can melt the blades.

Is artificial grass safe for children?
Generally yes, with two checks. Reputable makers test their grass for lead and other heavy metals, and some state it is free of PFAS, the "forever chemicals", so ask any supplier, us included, whether it has been tested. Then check the infill between the blades: garden grass often has silica sand or none, while some parents avoid rubber crumb. Under swings and frames, a shock pad softens a fall.

Is artificial grass safe for dogs and pets?
Generally yes, with the same two checks as for children: a grass tested for heavy metals, and an infill you are happy with, or none. A backing that drains lets a rinse carry urine away. At midday in summer the grass can be too hot for paws, so leave a shaded patch.
How much artificial grass do I need?
Multiply the width by the length: a 3 × 5 m garden is 15 m². Our grass comes on a roll 2 m wide and 25 m long, so an area wider than 2 m is covered in widths joined side by side, with a little extra to trim in. For an area about 4 × 6 m (24 m²), that is three widths of a 2 m roll, two joins, about 36.6 m² off the roll: one roll of 2 × 25 m. A 4 m roll is made on demand: yours would be two widths of a 4 m roll, one join.

- Roll
In the drawing, the standard roll, 2 m wide and 25 m long. Grass is sold in whole widths, so an area even a little wider than one width, trim included, needs another, and the grass off the roll can be well over the area. A 4 m wide roll is made on demand; on yours, two widths of a 4 m roll, one join.
- Join
Where two widths meet; your area has two joins. A good join has the factory edges trimmed so the tufts keep their spacing, the pile running the same way on both sides, and the backings glued to a joining tape beneath, so it is hard to spot from a few steps away.
- Edge
Each side is cut in by hand against the wall, kerb or paving, then fixed down to stop it lifting or curling in the heat.
- Drain
Water runs through the backing. In a garden it soaks down through the base into the ground; on a balcony, roof or concrete it follows the floor's fall to the outlets, which should stay clear and easy to reach, so point them out at the visit.
What is underfoot now?
The surface decides how the grass goes down. Choose yours below, and tell us which it is when you book.

Laying grass on sand or soil
The ground is normally dug out, levelled to a slight slope, or fall, for water, and compacted hard: firm sand as it is, softer ground built up with crushed stone and fine dust, with a weed membrane. Laid on loose sand, grass sinks in patches and its joins open, so this is the part not to skimp on. Ask at the visit whether we prepare the base.

Laying grass on concrete
Sound concrete is a good base as it is. The grass is usually fixed with adhesive along its edges and joins rather than all over, so water can still run beneath it, sometimes over a foam shock pad that softens the step and evens out small dips. The concrete needs a fall to a drain, or water sits beneath the grass.

Laying grass over tiles
Grass can go over sound tiles that drain. Before the visit, pour a jug or two of water slowly across the floor, away from the edge: if it runs to the drain, the floor is ready; if it pools, the tiling needs putting right first, or the water stays trapped under the grass.

Laying grass over decking
Decking must be firm, with no loose or rotten boards. A shock pad over the boards usually stops their lines showing through, and water must still drain between them. Decking moves, timber with the humidity and composite boards in the heat, so grass on it is usually screwed or stapled down, not glued, to allow for that. Ask at the visit whether yours needs a pad.
Do I need my building's permission?
Often, yes. On an apartment balcony or a tower roof, check your tenancy contract or community rules and ask the building management before you book: many Dubai towers ask for a work permit before contractors come in, and some restrict what can cover a balcony floor. In a villa community, the community management may want a permit for landscaping works too. If you rent, the tiles are your landlord's, so ask before anything is glued to them.

How much does artificial grass cost in Dubai?
We price your area from the measurements taken at the free visit in Dubai, or you can send its size on WhatsApp and ask. Across Dubai, grass is usually priced by the square metre, though some sellers quote per square foot or per roll, and the price rises with pile height, density and yarn quality. An installed price also depends on the ground: sand needing a base costs more to prepare than a sound balcony floor.

Why do quotes vary so much?
Mostly because of what goes into the grass and what lies beneath it. Denser, longer grass with better UV protection costs more per square metre, the ground may or may not need preparing, and a small area costs more per square metre than a large one, because every job carries its own setup and cuts. Compare quotes line by line, not by the total.
Cheap artificial grass usually saves on UV protection and backing, and in Dubai's sun that shows within a few summers as faded, brittle blades.
Buying a roll or having it installed?
Our grass comes on a roll 2 m wide and 25 m long, 50 m² a roll, with a 4 m wide roll made on demand for a large area. Many suppliers in Dubai sell artificial grass carpet by the roll, and ready-cut grass mats, in shops and online. Rolls and mats suit a small patch laid loose, which you can lift again. A lawn, a roof or a balcony that has to drain and stay flat needs more: the area measured, the joins planned and hidden, the edges fixed and, on sand, a proper base. We measure your area at the free visit, and our own fitters lay the grass to suit it.

What happens on installation day?
On installation day, our own fitters roll the grass out with the pile running one way, join the widths, then cut it in to every edge and fix it down. Ask at the visit what your surface needs first, how long the job would take and when it could be fitted.

How long does artificial grass last?
It depends on the grass, the sun and the use. Well-made, UV-stabilised grass on a good base commonly lasts about eight to ten years in a garden, less where it takes full sun all day and longer in shade; cheap grass lasts far less. Check how many years a maker's UV warranty covers. Heavy use, pets and poor drainage shorten its life; regular brushing and rinsing lengthen it. It is time to replace it when the blades stay flat after brushing or the backing starts to show.
How do I clean and look after artificial grass?
Hose the grass down every week or two to clear Dubai's dust, and brush busy areas against the pile now and then to keep the blades upright. Rinse pet areas promptly, with a mild soap or an enzyme cleaner for smells; skip bleach, which can discolour the blades, and close-range pressure washing, which can loosen tufts and blast out the infill. Lift leaves before they rot, and check the edges and joins after each summer.

Book a free visitHow much is artificial grass per square metre in Dubai?
It depends on the grass, the ground and the size of the area. We price your area at the free measuring visit in Dubai, or you can send its size on WhatsApp and ask. When you compare other quotes, check whether each is for the grass alone or laid, and whether it includes preparing the ground. To turn a price per square foot into one per square metre, multiply it by about 10.8.
Do you install artificial grass yourselves?
Yes. Our own fitters lay every artificial grass job we take, from cutting and joining the widths to fixing the edges, and no part of it goes to a subcontractor. They work to the widths and joins planned from the measurements taken at your free visit.
Can artificial grass go on a balcony?
Yes, on a sound floor that drains to its outlet. It usually goes over the tiles or bare cement screed, held with adhesive or tape along the edges and joins. A small, sheltered balcony can instead take a piece cut wall to wall and laid loose, which lifts out when you move and suits renters; higher up, wind gets under loose grass, so it should be fixed down. Keep the drain clear, and check your building's rules first.
How thick should artificial grass be?
Match the pile height to the use. Up to about 25 mm suits balconies, roofs and pet runs; about 25 to 35 mm suits most family gardens; longer, such as 38 or 40 mm, suits lawns walked on less. Taller is not always better, though. A long pile flattens on busy paths, and density, the tufts in each square metre, matters as much as height.
What is artificial grass made of?
Mostly plastic. The blades are usually polyethylene, the softest and most common; cheaper and shorter grasses use polypropylene, and some add nylon for toughness. Among them is a curled thatch yarn in brown, beige or light green, like the dead growth at a real lawn's base. They are tufted into a backing coated with latex or polyurethane and usually perforated so water drains through. Some grasses also have sand or rubber infill brushed in between the blades.
Is artificial grass waterproof, and does it drain?
It is made to let water through rather than shed it. The blades don't mind water, and good grass has a perforated backing, so rain and hose water drain away. It drains only as well as what lies beneath it, though, so it needs a compacted base on sand, or a floor that falls to its outlet on a balcony or roof.
Does artificial grass need underlay?
Not on a sound balcony or concrete floor, where the grass can be fixed straight down. The underlay for grass is a foam shock pad. It softens the step, evens out small dips and hides decking boards, and under play equipment it is needed, rated for the fall height. On sand or soil the grass goes on a compacted, levelled base with a weed membrane; any pad goes on top of that base.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the size and the ground. A balcony over a sound tiled floor is quicker than a garden on sand, which needs a firm, compacted base before any grass goes down. Ask at the visit how long your job would take.
Is astro turf the same as artificial grass?
Yes, in everyday use. AstroTurf is a brand, named after the Houston Astrodome, where its sports turf was laid in 1966, and still a trademark, but the name now covers any artificial grass, along with fake grass, synthetic turf, artificial turf and grass carpet. Today's garden grasses have longer, softer blades in mixed greens than the short, hard sports turf the name first meant.
Do you install artificial grass outside Dubai?
Ask us. We install artificial grass across Dubai, and elsewhere in the UAE case by case. Tell us where the job is and what it involves, and we confirm whether we can take it before anything is booked. The free measuring visit is a Dubai offer.
